BULLDOGS TAKE 2006 28+ CROWN!

The 2006 Rochester NABA 28+ Championship game took place in the afternoon on October 8, 2006 at Fairport High Acres in front of a crowd of about 40.  Although the grass infield and outfield areas were still squishy from the heavy rains over the past few weeks, the infield dirt areas were in good shape.  Bright sunshine and 73-degree weather with little wind made for a perfect day.  The match up pitted the long established Red Stockings (est. 1996) against the upstart Bulldogs (est. 2006).

The Bulldogs started the game batting 9 guys with 2 guys on the bench and the Red Stockings countered by batting 10 guys and 3 on the bench.  The starting pitcher for the Red Stockings was Bruce Hackett. Starting for the Bulldogs was Anthony Privitera.

The Bulldogs quickly jumped on top in the first inning, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. Jim Grasley doubled, followed by a singles from Joe Reina and David Cooley. The inning ended abruptly as the Red Stockings threw a guy out at first and then threw to third to get a running that was advancing from second. The Red Stockings responded in quick fashion in the bottom of the first with a single by Dennis Farrell, a walk by Chris White and a double by Hoffman,  making it 2-2 after 1 inning.

The Bulldogs didn’t let up in the second inning and scored 3 runs on 3 more hits. Tim Cooley had a single and then stole second; this was followed later in the inning with doubles from Jim Grasley and Joe Reina. The Red Stockings went down in order in the bottom of the second leaving the score 5-2 Bulldogs after 2 innings.

In the third, Chuck Chambers singled for the Bulldogs, but Bruce Hackett was able to leave him standing on second.  The Red Stockings came back to score 1 after Dennis Farrell singled and Chris White was hit by a pitch and the runner scored on a ground out.  The Bulldogs were shut down in the fourth and fifth innings. The Red Stockings scored 1 in the bottom of the fifth on a single from Tim Bubel, a passed ball and then a double by Dennis Farrell.

The Bulldogs came back in the sixth inning to tack on another, and what would be the game winning run when Tim Cooley lead off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and then came in on a sacrifice fly by Jon Devoe to center field. The Red stockings refused to give up and came back in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own. After a walk and a couple of wild pitches, Bruce Hackett scored on a single by Hoffman. Making the score 6-5.

Bruce Hackett shut the Bulldogs down in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings, only facing 10 batters. While Joe Reina came in to shut down the Red Stockings in the 6t and 7th and David Cooley got the two inning save in the 8th and 9th.  However even the ninth inning was not without its dramatics as Mickey Parker lead off the inning with a single to right field only to be thrown out at second by a perfect throw from the Bulldogs right fielder Glenn Mott.  Bruce Hackett pitched all nine innings for the Red Stockings. While Anthony Privitera went 4 and 2/3 for the Bulldogs, followed by Jim Grasley (2/3), Joe Reina (1 2/3) and David Cooley (2) got the save.
