PADRES WIN 2004 NABA 28+ CHAMPIONSHIP!
The Padres
captured their third championship in five years on Sunday by defeating the
Rockies 2-0 on a beautiful fall afternoon for baseball. The two regular
season division champions posted nothing but zeros on the scoreboard in a
classic pitching duel until the Padres broke through for two runs in the
bottom of the seventh inning on run scoring doubles by Craig Jones and Mike
Murphy.
Chuck Healy's
Rockies attempted to score first when they threatened in both the sixth and
seventh innings. In both innings they put two runners in scoring position
but failed to push across the games first run. Their biggest threat was in
the seventh when they loaded the bases on two hits and a walk, but Mark
Manioci got out of the jam with a strikeout and a pop-out. The Padres
finally got on the scoreboard in their half of the seventh. With one out
Jeff Murphy reached first on a single. Craig Jones then followed with a deep
fly ball to center field that just missed leaving the ballpark. Murphy
scored on the hit and Jones ended up on second base with a stand up double.
After Bill Mitchell grounded out, Mike Murphy hit a double down the left
field line to score Jones with the second and final run of the inning and
the game. The Rockies fought to the end with a Jim Egan two out single in
the ninth, but Manioci got the final out on a popup just beyond the infield
that second baseman Jeff Murphy caught to seal the victory.
Jeff Murphy and
Mike Murphy led the Padres attack with two hits apiece and Jim Egan led the
Rockies with two hits. Manioci earned his 13th victory of the season,
allowing 5 hits and striking out 11. Evan Bickel also pitched an excellent
game for the Rockies, allowing only 7 hits while striking out 12 Padres. The
league couldn't have asked for a tougher, harder fought game than was
provided by the 17-4 Rockies and 19-2 Padres.
Contributed by Dom Tubolino
Congrats to Dom Tubolino and the rest of his Padres squad for
capping a tremendous 2004 campaign with a 2-Zip nail-biter over the Rockies
on Sunday, October 3rd. It was a perfect "Fall Classic" day as Mark
Manioci pitched a beautiful complete game. The Rockies were battled
all day with several rallies but in the end Manioci and his teammates were
able to escape unscathed.
It was a tough summer with all the rain (1/3 of our games had
to be re-scheduled!) and the players, Managers and families put up with
plenty of craziness and I am truly grateful for all the help and support.
It's exactly what makes our league so great and I am already looking forward
to next year. Enjoy the off-season!
