PADRES TAKE THE '07 28+ CROWN!
September 30, 2007 -- The Padres
captured their 4th championship in 8 years Sunday afternoon with a 5-2
victory over the Rockies. On a picture perfect day for baseball, the Padres and Rockies battled in
a closely contested game. Chuck Healey's Rockies drew first blood early by
scoring a run in the first inning. After Craig Bodensteiner led off the
game with a walk and moved to second on a groundout, he stole third and
scored on Bill
Roessel's
single. As was the case in the first two playoff games, the Padres gave up
a run in the top of the first inning and needed to play catch up. It
didn't take long this time, however, as the Padres pushed three runs
across in the bottom half of the first. With one out, Mark Manioci and
Jeff Murphy drew walks. Craig Jones followed with a single to score
Manioci and Mitchell laced a double to score Murphy and Jones all the way
from first. The Padres carried the 3-1 lead into the fourth when the
Rockies cut the deficit in half. Roessel hit a one out single and then
stole second and third. After a strikeout, Jeff Haley hit a clutch two out
single to score Roessel and the Rockies were within 3-2. Once again
the Padres struck right back in the bottom half of the fourth. Jones hit a
one out single and scored again from first on Mike Murphy's two out
triple. After going
quietly in the fifth and sixth innings, the Padres extended their lead in
the seventh. Jeff Murphy led off with a triple into the right center field
gap. After Jones walked, Mitchell hit a sharp grounder to third that
caught Murphy off the base and he was tagged out. Jones was balked to
third and scored on another clutch post season hit by Todd Schoen. That
gave the Padres a 5-2 lead and then held off the Rockies the rest of the
way. Mark Manioci pitched another great game in this year's playoffs. He
scattered 5 hits and walked two to go along with his 10 strikeouts. The
Padres played sound defensive baseball behind Manioci, especially third
baseman Brian Karp, who turned in two gems to keep the Rockies off the
scoreboard.
Congratulations to Chuck and the Rockies on a very successful season. It's
always exciting getting together with you guys for these big games. The
Padres would like to thank the members of the Devils who came out to watch
the game, especially Dave Bryant who was very supportive. It was great to
see him at the ballpark. His presence was greatly appreciated.

CUBS WIN!...CUBS WIN!...
the 2007 18+ Championship!
August 13, 2007 -- On a
hot and sunny afternoon at the immaculate John Morgan Park in Hilton, NY,
the Cubbies claimed their second title in three years in the 2007
Championship game against a well dressed Mets squad. The Cubs got off to a
hot start as Paul Sova struck out the side in the top half of the first.
The bats were also hot in the first as Corey Blair and Jimmy Debay each
had RBI singles to put the Cubs out in front 2-0. The Cubs added to their
lead in the 3rd as Player-Coach of the Year Tim Sova lined an RBI single
over the shortstop to score Paul Sova who had reached on an HBP and swiped
second base.
Those pesky Mets would not go quietly though.
Just as it seemed the Cubs would cruise to the victory the Mets scored
their first run in the 4th aided by an error, a wild pitch, a balk, and
then a single. The Mets’ bats then got hot in the 5th as they scored two
runs on three hits and tied the game 3-3.
In typical Cubbie fashion the Cubs responded
immediately with a big inning in the bottom half of the 5th. Paul Sova’s
base on balls was followed by an Alex Rybczak RBI double and an RBI single
from Corey Blair. With the score at 5-3 Cubs Jimmy De’Bonds put the Mets
out of reach with a towering two run shot to the deepest part of John
Morgan Park. The Mets added a run in the 7th but fell to the Cubs by a
final score of 7-4.
Stars of the game included Paul Sova who struck out 9
on the bump, scored 3 runs and stole 3 bases, Alex Rybczak who scored
twice and had 2 hits including and RBI double, Corey Blair with 2 hits, 2
RBIs and a run scored, Jimmy De’Bonds who had 2 hits including a monstrous
2 run HR and 3 RBIs, and Coach Tim Sova who contributed an RBI single and
a stolen base and crafted a killer line-up. The Cubs would like to thank
their fans as this season’s attendance reached a record high 32 people.
The Cubs would like to remind you kids that if you stay in school and work
hard, some day you may be a Cub.
